Executive Management Trainee, GUARDIAN MEDIA

“The most amazing thing I have learnt so far is the understanding of the intricate and heavily mechanized, ordered process that is responsible for producing the daily newspapers. Newspapers production is a fascinating process that involves teams in several different disciplines, working assiduously to ensure that the final product is of high quality.”

Currently I am assigned to Guardian Media Ltd (GML) in the Editorial Department. Some of my key responsibilities include, providing editorial support to both reporters and editors, producing news stories, going out on assignments with reporters from both GML and CNC3 and spearheading important and integral projects that are in motion at the Guardian.

Several skills are necessary to ensure success in my field. These include effective time management, having the ability to think quickly on your feet as the media industry is extremely fast paced. Additionally, being confident, articulate and conscientious are beneficial in attaining success in this field. Being proactive gives you the upper hand and contributes to the overall successful completion of whatever task is being undertaken.

My greatest achievement to date is the vast amount of sales which I was able to generate while in Multimedia Sales. While there, I was responsible for closing million dollar sales which consisted of sales across all platforms except digital.

This Group is very forward-thinking in the strategic way in which business investments are made, and every industry that we have ventured into has seen high levels of innovation, revitalization and development.

Rewarding and insightful are two words I would use to describe my experience thus far. I have been consistently taken out of my comfort zone and this has helped me to develop and strengthen my areas of weakness along with further strengthening of my solid areas.

The persons with whom I work are very supportive. They do not withhold their knowledge and are fascinating team players. Outside the scope of the technicalities of work, they are genuinely admirable human beings and it is a pleasure to work alongside individuals who have made stellar careers in the media industry.

At this early stage in my career I have a favourite quote from Nelson Mandela which serves words of encouragement – Running taught me valuable lessons. In cross-country competition, training counted more than intrinsic ability, and I could compensate for lack of natural aptitude with diligence and discipline. I applied this in everything I did.”
